Orbital Facial Fractures at
Eye Care & Surgery Center in New Jersey

The orbit or eye socket can be thought of as the central portion of the face. Growth of the bone of the eye socket is essential to proper facial development. Trauma to the orbit or face can cause damage to the fine bone structures of the eye socket and surrounding facial bones. Damage to these bones can cause facial deformity, entrapment or eye muscles and double vision or sunken appearing eyes.

Often, a ball or fist can result in blowout of the very thin bones, especially of the floor of the orbit and the medial wall. The bones in these areas provide a barrier between the sinus cavities and the orbit. Fractures of the face and orbit, often cause certain clinical findings. These may include visible abnormality, a fracture that can be felt along the orbital rim, double vision, numbness along the side of the nose or the cheek, sinus congestion, bleeding from the nose, and a sunken appearance to the eye. If a fracture is suspected, a CAT-scan of your orbits and facial bones will be obtained. This will be done a specific way so as to best image the bones in question. Not all facial/orbital fractures require repair. A period of observation may be warranted depending on the severity and nature of the fracture. Should you require repair of a facial/orbital fracture, this will be done in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. This may require the use of synthetic materials to repair the bones and reconstruct the orbit. This may require an overnight stay in the hospital. Dr. Thiagarajah has extensive experience in evaluating, treating and repairing orbital fractures, and facial fractures. He has done extensive research in this area and has published several papers, as well as a chapter in a current surgical textbook on reconstruction of orbital and facial fractures. Please feel free to ask Dr. Thiagarajah or any of our staff should you have questions or concerns.
