Laser Vision Correction
The excimer laser produces a cool beam of light that reshapes the cornea under computer control. For nearsightedness and astigmatism the central cornea is flattened to improve natural visual acuity. For farsightedness the peripheral cornea is reshaped effectively steepening the center and improving unaided vision. The laser incorporates a very sophisticated eye tracker for ensuring accurate placement of the laser beam during the treatment.
Photorefractive Keratectomy, (PRK)
With PRK, the surface of the cornea is directly treated by the excimer laser, causing a flattening of the cornea. The surgeon enters the desired correction into the computer, which then calculates the number of energy pulses and pattern to achieve the proper result. The eye is anesthetized with eye drops and the procedure itself is painless. Most patients require less than 60 seconds of laser ablation. Afterwards a bandage contact lens is placed on the cornea until the surface heals. Eyedrops are used to facilitate healing. The drops also help to reduce post operative discomfort. PRK is presently approved by the FDA to treat the vast majority of age appropriate patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Laser-in-Situ Keratomileusis, (LASIK)
Lasik is the most recent refinement of laser vision correction. In Lasik, a thin layer of the cornea, called a flap, is created with an instrument called a microkeratome. Then the excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying cornea and achieve the desired vision correction. The flap is then replaced and generally reseals itself without the need for stitches.
As with PRK, LASIK is performed under eye drop anesthesia. There is generally less post operative discomfort as compared to PRK, and more rapid return of vision. Many people can return to work the next day after a post operative visit, although, some activities need to be discussed with Dr. Confino and his staff.
